Windscreen Information for Members
There are multiple options available now to add windscreen protection.
The aim of the protection is to apply a cover on top of the windscreen to reduce either the impact of an object hitting the window, or avoid damage at all to the window from objects hitting the windscreen.
When travelling outback (or even around town) we have noticed that the large front windscreen of the Grenadier is more likely to be damaged, which can negatively impact your holidays. We also noticed that not all insurances cover the replacement of our windscreens and that the cost is rather high because of the lack of aftermarket windscreens.
People use windscreen protection on their cars for a variety of reasons, primarily to enhance safety, maintain visibility, and protect their investment. Here's a breakdown of the key benefits:
1. Protection Against Chips and Cracks:
- Windscreen protection products, such as specialised coatings or films, create a barrier that makes the glass more resistant to impacts from road debris like stones, gravel, and sand. This significantly reduces the likelihood of chips and cracks, which are common and costly to repair or replace. Even small chips can spread over time due to temperature changes, vibrations, or water ingress, potentially leading to a full windscreen replacement. Protection helps prevent this escalation.
2. UV Protection:
- Windscreen protection can block a significant percentage of harmful UV rays from the sun. This not only protects the occupants of the car from skin damage but also prevents the car's interior (dashboard, seats, upholstery) from fading, cracking, and deteriorating over time, preserving its appearance and value.
3. Cost Savings:
- While there's an initial cost for the protection, it can save money in the long run by reducing the need for expensive windscreen repairs or replacements.
- For those with car insurance, some policies offer reduced or waived excesses for windscreen claims if you have specific windscreen coverage, making protection even more appealing.
Types of Windscreen Protection:
- Glass Coatings: These are typically liquid applications that chemically bond with the glass to create a durable, repellent layer.
- Protective Films: These are thin, transparent films applied to the exterior of the windscreen, acting as a physical barrier against impacts. Materials often include polyester or PVC, with ceramic films offering superior performance.
- Windscreen Covers: While not a permanent application, these covers can protect against frost, snow, ice, and UV damage when the car is parked.
In essence, windscreen protection is used to proactively safeguard a vital component of the car, leading to a safer, more comfortable, and potentially more economical driving experience.
Our club has experience with 2 different companies who provide protective films. We are investigating another option which is using glass coating. As of June 2025 we don't have enough information to provide this as an option to club members.
Option 1:ClearPlex
The ClearPlex option has been tested by 2 members. They have used different companies to apply the protection but have experienced no negative impacts of the solution. One member has had his windscreen damaged while using clearplex solution, but is confident that the usage of ClearPlex minimised the damage and was able to continue driving after a big stone hit the windscreen.
The ClearPlex team in Melbourne has recommended we use FG Screens for the SEQ club members. They have a facility in Burleigh Heads and have agreed to come out to a location in Brisbane for members who don't want to travel to Burleigh. We are still searching for a good facility (open to suggestions, please email president@ineos4x4clubqld.com.au) and once we have found it, we will set a date.

Option 2: Terminax
The Terminax option has been tested by one member (without too much outback driving) and the testing has not found any adverse impacts. This option is cheaper, (around the 350 AUD) but it does not come with the usage experience by the mining industry as with option 1. Option 3 Integrashield
One of our members (thanks Warwick) has gone for the Integrashield option, which costs $500 and is provided with 5 years replacement / repair screen warranty if chipped or broken!!! It was done by Cricks Sunshine Coast!
